In 2006 Ken Eastman began working with the Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company. Working together, they have been developing new forms in bone china and discovering new ways of decorating these. From the outset the collaboration was based on exploration and invention- a ‘what would happen if’ approach. There was never been a specific design brief, other than to share different approaches to working with clay and see what would emerge. Working with original pattern manuscripts from the Derby factory archives, Eastman became absorbed in their originality and wonderful sense of colour and composition. He made models for new shapes in his studio in Herefordshire and RCB have found ways of being able to reproduce these exciting forms in bone china. The new range of work was launched in Paris, New York and London in 2009. It is featured in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 2009 the collaboration received the Industry Award at the First British Ceramic Biennial in Stoke-on-Trent. Design work with the company is ongoing.

‘Out of Place’
|
This is an Arts Council project which began in May 2008, and which explores how ideas of ‘place’ can align with international making practice.
Seeking to engage with the local and investigate how meaning changes when specific place can be linked with object making.
